What is an Atomic Clock?

Popularly priced "atomic clocks" are actually clocks which periodically synchronize their time  with the NIST 'Atomic clock" in Colorado.  The NIST or National Institute of Standards and Technology is a government agency within the US Commerce Department's  Technology Administration. Among the NIST's many functions is the responsibility of maintain and communicating the official national time.

Radio controlled clocks generally have a radio receiver set to the NIST's frequency. In turn they will synchronize their time multiple times a day to ensure accurate timekeeping. These clocks are particularly convenient when there is concern for the longevity of batteries or loss of power due to frequent electricity outages. Similarly  some models offer the convenience of automating the twice -a-year time change. Also some models are specifically designed for travel.

The NIST broadcasts from Fort Collins, Colorado on radio station WWVB, 60kHz. 60kHz is a low frequency, out of range of most AM/FM or TV receivers. WWVB is broadcasting in a code, which atomic or radio clocks are designed to translate into the current date and time.

Key Features to Compare
Features Benefits
International Reception Ability to receive radio signals and therefore capable of synchronizing with atomic clocks throughout Europe and parts of Asia.
Battery Powered or Battery Backup Protection against power failures
Self-Adjusts to Daylight Saving Time Automates the time changes
